Gel Packets
How come they put silica gel packets in various items?
I recently bought a new backpack for school, and inside i found a packet that said “Do not eat.” I recognized this as silica gel, but what I don’t get is why they have to put such packets in items. Little kids could eat it on accident and not know what it is. What is the reason?
Its strange that you would ask this in the business and finance section.
Neverthless, silica gel is what is known as a desiccant i.e. it adsorbs moisture and thus prevents growth of mold in the backpack you bought.
Interestingly silica gel (technically Silicon Dioxide) is not poisonous to humans. However, the message “do not eat” is put simply because it is not food!
